Boardwalk Avenue Rough Pen is a connected Script. It’s great for headlines, quotes or in packaging. It has a casual hand drawn vibe to it but it’s clean and legible. Manufactory JNL and its oblique counterpart were re-drawn from examples of a now-antique typeface used within many advertisements found throughout the pages of The American Stationer magazine, circa 1879.

The term ‘manufactory’ was popular during this era; the word being a more archaic form of ‘factory’.

There is a bit of Western flavor to this type design, as the spurred serifs and the top and bottom strokes are heavier than the vertical and mid-point stroke weights.

Designed by Jeff Levine, Narrow Deco JNL is an art deco and display sans font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.


The hand lettered word ‘puzzles’ from the box cover of a 1940s set of metal “connected” puzzle pieces manufactured by the A.C. Gilbert Company was the initial typographic model, but some additions and changes were made.

Instead of the right side of the ‘P’ being a semi-circle, it was changed to a more conservative ‘’squared’ look.  After drawing out all of the necessary glyphs, the overall height of the characters was extended to make the letters and numbers appear taller and narrower.

The end result is Narrow Deco JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
