An interesting hand lettered example of Art Deco lettering (minus the letter ‘L’) was spotted on Pinterest and served as the inspiration for Deco Sketch JNL

Because there was no attribution as to the age or source of the alphabet, it can only be surmised that it was a scan from a 1930s or 1940s source.

The original showed many of the irregularities of pen lettering, and had rounded terminals.  The digital version has been redrawn more uniformly with flat terminals.

Deco Sketch JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Inspired by a retro Art Deco poster as well as many of the true classic Art Deco type designs of the 1930s and 1940s, Deco Revisited JNL is a bold, black, stencil-influenced design with no counters.

Although being a contemporary design, its use in any retro project will truly evoke a feeling for the “streamline” era.

Designed by Jeff Levine, Spring Season JNL is an art deco and display slab font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

Spring Season JNL is a decorated and stylized Art Deco slab serif design from 1935 which is based on the hand lettered title on the sheet music for “Paris in the Spring”.

The characters are cut through with both a straight line and a wavy, spoked line which looks something like a thorny vine.

Spring Season JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Designed by Jeff Levine, Park West JNL is an art deco and display slab font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

The thin, stylish Art Deco slab serif lettering featured on the cover of the 1934 sheet music for “Then I’ll be Tired of You” inspired the digital type face Park West JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Central Park West has always been the upscale area for affluent New Yorkers, but in the Great Depression years of the 1930s the mystique of the well-to-do held an even stronger significance.

Designed by Nick Shinn, Headwaters is an art deco and sans serif font family. This typeface has nine styles and was published by Shinntype.

Full of curves, Headwaters is a nine-weight sans serif face with a special personality.

The lower case is more conventional than the capitals, for ease of reading in extended text setting. The capitals have some unusual, eye-catching letter shapes—a little bit art deco or geo—rendered in a subtly grotesk manner, in keeping with the overall tone of the typeface.

Download New Yorker Type Classic Fonts Family From Wiescher-Design

Download New Yorker Type Classic Fonts Family From Wiescher-Design
Designed by Gert Wiescher, New Yorker Type Classic is an art deco and display serif font family. This typeface has seven styles and was published by Wiescher-Design.

New-Yorker-Type was one of the first typefaces I tried my hand at in 1985. I meant it as a revival of the typeface used by the New Yorker magazine. I did not scan it. I just looked at the type and redrew it completely by hand. Only much later did I come to know, that there is a bundle of similar typefaces of that period. Rea Irvin’s design for New-Yorker magazine was just one of them, maybe the best.
In the next step I repaired some of the mistakes that I made more than thirty years ago.
Now on the eve of 2020 I gave the font a complete overhaul and added a set of Swash Initials, Cyrillic and Greek glyphs and many ligatures. The font now has 1075 glyphs and is all set for most latin writing systems. On top of that I made two versions, a Classic one with rounded corners and a pointed Pro version for a more up-to-date look. Take your pick.
Yours sincerely, honoring Rea Irvin a great type- and magazine-designer, Gert Wiescher

Download Deco Design JNL Fonts Family From Jeff Levine Fonts
Designed by Jeff Levine, Deco Design JNL is an art deco and display sans font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

Hand lettering isn’t a perfect art form, and this is why it often has an appeal over formal typesetting.  Individual interpretation can lead to variations in style, character shape and overall design concept.

Case in point: The hand-drawn title for the1933 sheet music “Why Can’t This Night Go on Forever” is a simple Art Deco sans, however it mixes character widths and even angles the letter ‘C’ in a nonconventional way.

Deco Design JNL is the digital version of this alphabet, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Designed by Jeff Levine, Jazz Guitar JNL is an art deco font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

Latin music was all the rage in the United States from the 1930s through the 1950s and songs with a “South of the Border” or “Old Mexico” theme were plentiful.

The 1940 sheet music for “Make Love with a Guitar” evoked the idea of serenading one’s lovely lady on horseback while strumming the guitar…at least if you went by the by the illustration under the song’s name.

As the hand lettered title was rendered in an Art Deco design, it became the basis for Jazz Guitar JNL [which seemed a more befitting name], and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Download Heller Sans JNL Fonts Family From Jeff Levine Fonts

Download Heller Sans JNL Fonts Family From Jeff Levine Fonts
Designed by Jeff Levine, Heller Sans JNL is an art deco and display sans font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

Heller Sans JNL is based on the main letterforms of an experimental alphabet designed by Steven Heller; noted author of over 170 books on design and visual culture.  Some modifications were made in turning his design into a digital font.

In his own words, here is the background to this typeface:

“I recently recovered this from the junk heap. It is a yellowing photostat of my first and only typeface design (1969-70). Total folly! At the time I was smitten by Art Moderne lettering. I called it “Klaus Boobala Bold” because I liked the K and B.

I’ve lost the letters S through Z, which were made. The letters were drawn with compass, Techno pen (that frequently clogged). as well as a triangle and T-square. The inline and outline made no real logical sense.

I based the design, in part, on Kabel, Avant Garde and it was a product of whatever I could accomplish with those tools.  The caps-only alphabet was photographed and produced as a film negative that was cut in foot-long strips and spliced to fit on a Typositor reel. Sadly, the negatives made for the font were too brittle and the splice snapped apart in the Typositor.

I worked on it for well over a month and used the face only once. I realized with this attempt, like so many other times I attempted different challenges, that type design — indeed mechanical drawing — was not my strong suit.”

Heller Sans JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Designed by Indie Type, Graphemic is an art deco font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Picatype Studio.

Inspired by the medieval print design, the look of the sans serif typeface is strong and beautiful. It brings charming curves and satisfying patterns to traditional thick fonts. I like to use this font for printed material and titles - the height attracts attention and creates a visually attractive modern medieval feel. Graphemic fonts include two fonts - Regular & Light.

All offer broad language support, upper and lower case letters, extended numbers and punctuation.

Specifically suitable for: Posters, Blockbusters, films, trailers, headlines, titles, logos, branding, scripts, display & bold ‘goods’.

Thank you for viewing! - (and more thanks for the purchase: P)

Designed by Jeff Levine, Bargain Shopping JNL is an art deco font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

F.W. Woolworth was once one of the giants of the variety store chains, along with the likes of Kress, S.S. Kresge, McCrory’s, Neisner Brothers, Ben Franklin and others.

In 1960, the company brought out a new corporate logo with a type design harking back to the Art Deco style of the 1930s and 1940s.

A photo of one of their old store fronts (despite having only eight letters to work with) inspired the digital interpretation of the signage as Bargain Shopping JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
